Our FArm family
We have reverence for our animals, the bees, the birds, and all other beings as they all have a purpose in nurturing the land, our bodies, our minds and spirits.
DOLLY

JUNE
|
PATSY
|
Left behind from the previous cattle owners, we quickly fell in love with this smart, sassy girl - naming her after a favorite music icon. It has taken a lot of time and patience for us to gain her trust and for her to let us trim her hair so she could see. The vet thinks Dolly is around 30 based on her teeth. Likes: Fig newtons, head scratches and ear rubs from Lindsay (sometimes), salt lick, and rolling in dirt. Dislikes - other treats when she knows there are fig newtons, wearing a halter, other animals getting attention while she waits patiently.

We tried for a long time to find Dolly a friend and our patience paid off. We found a lovely couple needing to downsize their farm and looking for good homes for some of their animals. June (we hadn't named her yet) immediately came up to us nuzzling so we would pet her. She is like a big dog, follows us around nosing us to pet her. Likes: treats, hay, her feed, sunning herself, and lots of head scratches. Dislikes: not being able to follow her humans out of her pen and other animals getting attention.
|
In line with our country-themed names for the donkeys, June gave birth to Patsy in August 2022. We were waiting on her for months as we didn't know when she was due (we adopted June when she was already pregnant). Patsy has kept us on our toes, laughing and loving attention. She is like a dog following us around and demanding attention and cuddles. She just recently lost her super fuzzy coat for the summer. Likes: treats, being first out of the gate, food, cuddles, attention. Dislikes: having to wait, being late to dinner, being in her own barn stall.

Hawkeye – Araucanas (light blue green egg)
Third to lay an egg. Looks like a hawk and always looking at you with her head cocked and one eye (not unusual for chickens but very noticeable with Hawkeye). Likes: Getting out of the fence and joining Blanche and Jack on the side-by-side, loves yogurt and typically has it all over her head after eating it, walking down the chicken ladder when everyone else flies down from the roost. Dislikes: Being caught - which we have to do occasionally for care and being pet |
Cher (Cochin, brown eggs)
Named after the one and only Cher – Lindsay said her feathered legs reminded her of boots Cher would wear and that’s how she was named. Cher lives up to her namesake - taking her sweet time going into the coop, looking for crickets and making everyone wait on her. Likes: sleeping in the corner of the coop and eating. Dislikes: being picked on and waking up as she is always the last one out of the coop, sleepily taking her time. |
Rosie (Cochin, brown eggs)
Named after sweet Rose (Betty White) from the Golden Girls, Rosie keeps us laughing when she runs with her fuzzy feet. Occasionally Rosie likes to give a wing slap to her fellow chicks or humans. Likes – yogurt and scratch. Dislikes – being pet and interrupted while dust bathing. |
Betty (Dark Brahama mixed with Bantam Silkie - pinkish-brown eggs)
Betty was born on the farm and greeted us peeking out from under her mom, Charlene. Named Betty after we talked about her perfect bouffant hair do. Likes: Laying her eggs in the nest box not out in the covered day pen, being held and hearing how amazing her bouffant looks. Dislikes: Being the last one in the coop or day pen |
Charlene (Dark Brahama, brown eggs)
The most curious since we brought her home so she is named for the beloved, Designing Women’s character that Jean Smart played (the episode where Charlene tells Julia she yearns for knowledge. Likes: Being pet, running up and challenging her fellow chicks, treats – especially yogurt. Dislikes – being challenged by fellow chicks |
Delta (Noir Maran, dark brown eggs)
Delta is a beautiful Noir Maran so it only felt fitting to name her after the actress who played Suzanne, the Beauty Queen on Designing Women, Delta Burke. Delta is a quiet one and plays well with others - most of the time, when treats aren't involved. Likes: Treats Dislikes: Being touched |
Karen (French Copper Black Maran, dark brown eggs)
Since she came to the farm Karen has been all up in everyone’s business and enjoys sneaking up to peck us from behind – so we decided the name Karen was fitting. Likes: Picking on other chicks, sneaking up to her humans and pecking them Dislikes: being pet, touched or looked at |
Jack - Royal Palm Turkey
Jack passed away peacefully in her sleep. We miss her terribly. Since the day we brought Jack home, she hasn't stopped talking. She refused to be limited by the fence in the chicken pasture and spends time on our porch, sitting on our laps, the rocking chairs, the trees, and our roof. With Jack around there is never a dull moment. Jack would follow us around and sit by us so we could pet her. I like to think she is watching over the farm and all of us. |
Blanche
Blanche (Araucanas, light blue green egg)
First to lay an egg and loved being outside the chicken pasture. Known for laying eggs by the front porch and under the back porch. Sadly, disappeared one day and we suspect a hawk or fox got her. |
Cole (Bantam Silkie, small cream-colored eggs)
Our standard of perfection (there is a book for showing chickens and we thought the title of the book suited Cole). Sweet as can be and determined to hatch chicks, that unfortunately never did. She was the smallest in the flock but had a big personality. Cole was killed by a hawk. We were devastated and miss her. She was laid to rest at "our tree" - a large tree in our pasture that Matt carved our initials in. |
Dorothy – (Lavender Orpington, light brown eggs)
Dorothy, named after Bea Arthur’s character on Golden Girls had a big personality. She enjoyed sitting on our legs or Lindsay’s shoulder to nap when she was younger. Our beloved Dorothy was killed by a hawk as she was out with her BFF, Rosie searching for bugs. She was laid to rest at "our tree" - a large tree in our pasture that Matt carved our initials in. |
